Head of Risk, Safety and Compliance

We have an exciting opportunity for a Head of Risk, Safety & Compliance to join us on a permanent basis – the successful candidate will be a key member of the operations department, ensuring the effective delivery of the organisation's overall safety & compliance strategy across all areas of the business.  This role will deliver cultural change & learnings into all departments, identifying requirements for training, development & business improvements, aligned to the agreed risk appetite of the business. 

 

Main duties include:

 

  • Owning the plan to strengthen the safety culture of the organisation, including managing & facilitating the delivery of the annual RSC workshops, fostering engagement by ensuring a customer-centric focus.
  • Communicate & implement ISM & ISO standards, providing guidance to all departments in maintaining the efficient operation and control of the Red Funnel Quality, Risk, Safety , Environment and Security Management System (IMS).
  • Ensure compliance to include the Health & Safety Act 1974, COSHH, all regulation pertaining to Ro/Ro ferries and Hi-Speed craft in categorised waters.
  • Maintain collaborative & transparent relationships with the MCA and chosen classification society.
  • Undertake ‘Designated Person’ duties, which is pivotal in implementing an effective safety management system and providing a link between ship & shore personnel.
  • Provide guidance to appointed safety officials, both afloat and ashore, to maintain high level awareness of safety matters, including through accident & incident investigation & reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with current legislative requirements & the IMS by managing and updating: Business Risk Register; Internal & external Audit Program; Annual Business Objectives; Evaluation of Compliance; Asbestos Register; Fire & First Aid Risk Assessments.
  • Ensure relevant health & safety training is in place including Manual Handling, Fire Awareness; Risk Awareness; COSHH; Asbestos Register.
  • Conduct formal & informal safety inspections of all locations.
  • Be part of the company’s Emergency response Team.
  • Advise the business on GDPR regulations.

 

What we’re looking for:

 

  • At least 5 years in a senior safety leadership position.
  • Evidence of improving safety culture within a similar sized organisation.
  • Certificate of competency and/or equivalent industry experience and recognised safety qualification ie NEBOSH Cert/Dip.
  • ISM/ISO auditor, COSHH and ISPS Company Security Officer or equivalent.
  • Experience of management of safety & compliance and quality control.
  • Possess ability to positively adapt to change, maintaining resilience with the ability to interpret and influence our safety culture.
  • Ability to demonstrate social & economic responsibility by behaving ethically and inclusively, considering social and economic impact at all times.
  • Excellent communication skills across all mediums and to a range of audiences
  • Ability to embody and encourage a customer centric and empathetic culture at all times, promoting the health & wellbeing of our internal & external customers to support our purpose beyond profit.
  • Demonstrable training skills across a range of delegates & topics.
  • Previous experience within the Maritime sector desirable.

 

The successful candidate will work 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, on a hybrid arrangement offering some remote working.
